A New Chapter — St James Arcade
Sydney's destination for serious eyewear. Two locations. One independent vision: that great eyecare and great design are not a compromise.
Ocular & Eyes opened its first store in Chatswood in 2016 with a very specific idea of what an eyewear practice should be: independent, clinically serious, and stocked with frames that required genuine effort to source. That idea built a following. And when the time came to expand into the CBD, the question was never just about foot traffic or retail metrics. It was about finding a location that felt right. St James Arcade, on Castlereagh Street, did.
St James Arcade wasn't a convenience. It was a deliberate choice — a building that has been home to rare, considered things for decades, on a street that Sydney has always reserved for its best.
“We wanted a location with the kind of character you can’t manufacture. St James Arcade has been here long before us, and that history mattered.”
Castlereagh Street is one of Sydney's oldest and most storied retail addresses. Named by Governor Macquarie in 1810, it has been the city's luxury precinct for over a century — the address where Cartier, Chanel, Hermès, Dior and Gucci have all planted their flags. It is a street with a standard, and that standard has held.
St James Arcade itself is a time capsule within that street. With its distinctive gold-tiled floors, antique jewellers, and the kind of tenants that have occupied the same shop for decades, it carries a sense of permanence that newer retail spaces simply cannot replicate. This is a building that has always been home to things made with care and sold with knowledge. Vintage clothing. Fine jewellery. Objects that reward close attention. Walking through it feels different to walking through a mall, because it is fundamentally different.
For a store built on the idea that eyewear should be chosen thoughtfully, that craft matters as much as style, and that the relationship between client and optician is a long one. This felt like the right room to be in.
THE COLLECTION
The CBD store is now home to Sydney's largest collection of Chrome Hearts eyewear, finished in sterling silver or 18K gold, with lenses produced in collaboration with Carl Zeiss. Authorised stockists in Australia are rare. We carry it accordingly: the full optical and sunglass range, available to try in person and fitted on-site.
Every brand on the floor was chosen deliberately. Every frame has a reason to be there. Several names make their debut in the CBD that aren't available in Chatswood: MasahiroMaruyama, whose sculptural titanium frames are among the most distinctive things being made in Japan right now; Japonism, Akoni, Reykjavik Eyes, Native Sons and Jacques Durand, each with their own uncompromising point of view. The full range also includes Cartier, DITA, Masunaga MOC, Factory900 and 999.9.
True Vintage Revival (TVR) deserves its own mention. Also out of Sabae, Japan, TVR is built on a single conviction: that the greatest eyewear designs in history were made between the 1940s and 1960s, and that they deserve to be made again, and… properly. Every frame is produced using original blueprints and hand tools passed from master to apprentice, with techniques like the Datum Expression Size system, keyhole bridges, seven-barrel hinges, and functional spear rivets that most of the industry has long since abandoned. The result is eyewear that feels genuinely different in the hand. Not vintage-inspired. Vintage, rebuilt with the discipline it always deserved.
CARL ZEISS VISION
The CBD store is Sydney's dedicated hub for experiencing Carl Zeiss Vision. Ocular & Eyes is an authorised Carl Zeiss Vision Expert boutique, and this location is where that partnership is felt most fully. With over 175 years of precision optics behind it, Zeiss sets the standard for lens clarity, comfort and personalisation. Every pair of ZEISS SmartLife Individual lenses is fitted using the ZEISS VISUFIT1000 — a consultation system that captures over 3,000 data points to build a lens profile matched precisely to how you see and move through the world. Working with the best lens makers in the world means we can pair any frame in the store, whether a TVR classic, a Chrome Hearts statement piece or a Masunaga MOC limited edition; with optics that do it justice.
Eye examinations are available at both locations, bulk-billed for all Medicare card holders, with all major health funds accepted. Appointments are recommended, call us or get in touch through the website to book.
